BEFORE I go for my sclerotherapy:

No significant preparation is required on your part.
You will be able to go right back to your normal routine immediately after your session.
Anticipate being there for about 20 – 30 minutes BEFORE you start your injections.
During this time you shall have your blood pressure, heart rate measured. This allows us to ensure that if you have any problem with the sclerotherapy injections, we have your prior blood pressure and heart rate to compare it to.

The nurse shall apply a cream to the location where the injections are going to be given. This acts to provide a degree of analgesia (pain relief) during the injections.

Prior to starting your sessions the nurse shall ask you two important questions that you will need to answer are:

1. Are you pregnant – we suggest not to have these injections done when you are pregnant?
2. Are you breast feeding – we suggest not to have these injections done when you are breastfeeding.

Once in the room, the nurse shall apply a tight band around the leg which is going to be treated. This is only tight enough to distend the veins and make them easier to target.

DURING the treatment:

Anticipate that you shall receive anywhere between 10 – 20 injections of the medication.

The medication we use is “Polidocanol” a medical soap. We combine this with CO2 (carbon dioxide) and usually administer 10 ml (3 syringes) of the medicine at each session.

Immediately AFTER treatment:

Please walk briskly and without stopping immediately after treatment for at least 20 minutes—after each Sclerotherapy session.

Wear your compression stockings for 3 consecutive days, 24 hours a day.

THE DAY AFTER and onwards:

Remove all bandages and stockings the next morning

Showering and bathing can be taken after the stockings are removed the NEXT morning, put stockings on immediately after showering

There is no restriction of activity once you have had your session

For those who have to fly the next day or soon thereafter, it is okay to do so. However we recommend that you wear your Class II compression stockings during your flight.

Expect to see bruising over the injected sites for the next 7 – 10 days.

You might also find some redness and tenderness over the injected sites. You can apply cold compresses over these as well as take a pain killer if needed.

The injected veins can take 6 – 12 months to show the full effects of the treatment.

General instructions:

Please remember to bring your stockings back with you on your next visit. In the meantime, these can be washed in warm soap water.

Elevate legs at the level of your hip while sitting.

Do not expose your legs to sunshine if there is still bruising in the area treated

Most importantly : if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at – [email protected]
