Long term

Foam sclerotherapy

Reviewed by Dr Amit Kumar

A foam medicine was injected into the treated veins to seal them; your first check confirms they are closing as expected - this is usually around one month after you have completed your sclerotherapy - at Dr. Amit Kumar's clinic.

Where you are now

The immediate recovery is behind you. This page is about the weeks and months ahead — the treated veins fading, and returning to your full routine.

Pain and medication

Any strong discomfort should have passed. Occasional tightness or itching along the treated veins can continue for a few weeks. You should no longer need regular pain relief.

Your dressings & stockings

You may be asked to keep wearing a daytime compression stocking for a further period - this would be based on your venous ultrasound done earlier. Check at your visit exactly how long to continue, if you are unsure.

Moving and activity

Walking
Keep walking daily — it helps circulation and comfort.
Driving
Back to normal driving.
Work
Back to your usual work.
Exercise
Build back to your full exercise routine; ask about high-impact activity if the leg still feels tender.
Flying
Long journeys are generally fine again by now. Keep moving and stay well hydrated on any long trip.

When will I be back to normal?

Most people feel fully back to normal in daily life within a few days. The visible veins keep fading over the following months, and brown staining can take up to a year to lighten toward your skin tone.

What is normal

  • Some veins still visible and fading slowly.
  • Brown staining that lingers before lightening.
  • Treated cords that stay firm for weeks before softening - so long as they are not painful to touch.
  • A small number of veins may need a further session — this is common, not a failure.
  • Expect a reddish hue around the treated veins, this shall take time to settle - sometimes several months.

What is not normal — contact us

Contact the clinic if you notice any of these:

  • A treated area that becomes newly hot, hard, red and tender.
  • A new open sore near the ankle.
  • A vein that looks more swollen or worse than before rather than better.

Your follow-up

After your one month follow up, you are likely to follow up with Dr. Amit Kumar once a year - this is because all veins recur - often at different locations, as part of your pre disposition to veins, not because of the therapy.
